Project Description

The project is an urban design proposal situated in İzmir’s Bayraklı district, focusing on transforming a former industrial zone into a future-oriented Central Business District (CBD). Drawing from the area’s historic role as a trade and industrial center since the 17th century, the project seeks to restore Bayraklı’s significance within the Aegean region. Key vista points, including the Smyrna Mound, Alsancak Port, and Basmane Train Station, informed the site’s spatial relationships and orientation.

Field studies identified three major challenges: insufficient integration with neighboring districts, traffic congestion that treats Bayraklı as a crossing point rather than a destination, and the risk of shrinking business areas due to industrial land reallocation. To address these, the design proposes a tubular transportation network intended for both goods and passengers, freeing the ground level for public recreational spaces. Vertical structures are envisioned to host logistics and production areas at lower levels, with office and innovation spaces above. Through these strategies, the project aims to create a dynamic, connected, and resilient urban fabric that redefines Bayraklı’s role in the region.
